![]() ![]() Picking up directly where the previous film left off, Rey (Daisy Ridley) is trained in the ways of the Force by a bearded and somewhat disheveled Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), now a Jedi Master living in monk-like seclusion, which is not all that different from Luke's encounter with Yoda (Frank Oz). To be more precise, writer and director Rian Johnson models his follow-up to JJ Abrams' 2015 film after Irvin Kershner's 1980 epic space opera in spirit only, following many of the same plot points and beats without completely seeming familiar or a rehash. If The Force Awakens is a homage to the film that launched the Star Wars empire - in a good and highly entertaining way that felt more like nostalgic tribute than boring duplicate - then The Last Jedi is essentially an echo of The Empire Strikes Back. On the upside, no need to waste my time on Episode IX (Or X, or XI, or.).MILD SPOILER WARNING - please skip this portion of the review if you want to remain 100% spoiler-free. The movie simply degenerated into action sequences after that. Them possibly working together held my attention but the intrigue was short-lived. The Rey-Kylo Ren relationship had potential but went nowhere new or interesting and was snuffed out pretty quickly. Its essentially one long action-drama, with little in the way of engagement or originality. Unfortunately, Episode VIII doesn't come close to the engagement, novelty and adventure of Episode VII. Moreover, the blending of the old characters and the new was very well done, with the feeling that the torch had been passed to the new generation. A rollicking adventure with engaging characters. It grabbed my attention from the word go and held it all the way through. I'm not generally a Star Wars fan but to my surprise I enjoyed Episode VII - The Force Awakens. Meanwhile, The Resistance are locked in deadly battle with the First Order and, while they have some minor victories, it seems like a futile struggle. ![]() However, Kylo Ren also wants to track down Skywalker, and uses Rey for that purpose. He is initially hesitant but eventually decides to train Rey in the way of The Force. Picking up where The Force Awakens left off, Rey meets Luke Skywalker and tries to convince him to help The Resistance. ![]()
